Size frequency distributions of abnormal protein deposits in Alzheimer's disease and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

چکیده
The size frequency distributions of beta-amyloid (A beta) and prion protein (PrPsc) deposits were studied in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) respectively. All size distributions were unimodal and positively skewed. A beta deposits reached a greater maximum size and their distributions were significantly less skewed than the PrPsc deposits. All distributions were approximately log-normal in shape but only the diffuse PrPsc deposits did not deviate significantly from a log-normal model. There were fewer larger classic A beta deposits than predicted and the florid PrPsc deposits occupied a more restricted size range than predicted by a log-normal model. Hence, A beta deposits exhibit greater growth than the corresponding PrPsc deposits. Surface diffusion may be particularly important in determining the growth of the diffuse PrPsc deposits. In addition, there are factors limiting the maximum size of the A beta and florid PrPsc deposits.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: A case report
Background: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) as a life-threatening neurodegenerative disorder is not usually diagnosed in early stages of the disease because of a variety in its clinical manifestations. This study aimed to present a middle-aged woman with psychiatric symptoms who ultimately was diagnosed as a CJD case. Case presentation: This 48-year-old woman had progressive symptoms of depres...
متن کاملSpatial relationships between diffuse prion protein deposits and neuronal perikarya in variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Two morphological types of prion protein (PrPsc) deposit occur in the cerebral cortex of cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), viz., diffuse and florid deposits. The objective of this study was to determine whether diffuse-type PrPsc deposits in areas of the cerebral cortex in six cases of the variant form of CJD (vCJD) were spatially correlated with neurons and whether diffuse dep...

Human prion diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are infectious, inherited, or sporadic neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by the accumulation of an abnormal isoform of the host-encoded prion protein. This affects nervous tissue in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and, additionally, in lymphoid tissue in bovine spongiform encephalopathy-linked variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Exp...
متن کاملDispersion of prion protein deposits around blood vessels in variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
In variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), a disease linked to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), florid-type prion protein (PrP(sc)) deposits are aggregated around the larger diameter (> 10 µm) cerebral microvessels. Clustering of PrP(sc) deposits around blood vessels may result from blood-borne prions or be a consequence of the cerebral vasculature influencing the development of the fl...
متن کاملLaminar Distribution of the Pathological Changes in Sporadic and Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
The laminar distributions of the pathological changes in the cerebral cortex were compared in the prion diseases sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) and variant CJD (vCJD). First, in some cortical regions, the vacuolation ("spongiform change") was more generally distributed across the cortex in sCJD. Second, there was greater neuronal loss in the upper cortex in vCJD and in the lower cort...
